This is a pre-employment course focussing on unemployed learners who want to gain employment in the disability support industry, including disability accommodation services.
The Victorian Government funds community service organisations to provide a range of support services to people with disability. The support is based on the individual needs and promotes community participation, relationship building, skill development and maintenance. Accommodation is also offered in shared housing with the residents supported by a team of staff who usually work according to a roster.
This course will give participants a good insight into what it is like to work in accommodation or wider disability support services.
On completion of the course the participants will have the opportunity to apply for any relevant positions in disability support services.
All coursework will be contextualised for the disability support services industry where possible and includes:
Overview of working in the disability support sector
Understanding the legislative and ethical environment
Understanding safe work practices
Understanding concepts such as person centred behaviours, social inclusion, respect and Financial literacy skills based on the Be MoneySmart units developed by ASIC
Cultural awareness, communication skills and skills for working effectively with others
Employability Skills including understanding of the functional English language and literacy skills required for working in the disability support sector
Practical skills awareness through guest speakers and work place experiences
Employment preparation including mock interviews with accommodation staff and guest speakers.
